Vastu Compass and Main Door Direction for Home Buyers
Updated: Oct 23
Main-door direction in Vastu is one part of a wider layout review. Establish north, distinguish the direction the entrance faces from its position within the home, and then consider the rooms around it. North or east facing alone does not make a home suitable, and south facing alone does not settle the question.

Why does the main entrance matter in Vastu?
Traditional Vastu approaches give the entrance an important role in how a home is arranged. Families who follow these traditions may treat its direction as an early home-search preference. That makes it useful to define the preference before viewing properties, rather than relying on an agent’s description of a north-facing or east-facing home.
A helpful question is: are you interested in the direction the door faces, the door’s position on a particular wall, or both? A detailed traditional assessment may divide the wall into smaller sectors. A broad compass label does not describe all those details.
What is the difference between house facing and entrance location?
For a common facing convention, stand inside the main doorway and look outward; the direction you face describes the entrance’s outward orientation. Record that convention when sharing the reading. The door’s location is a different question: where does it sit relative to the centre and perimeter of the floor plan?
Do not automatically substitute the garage door, street side or driveway direction for the main entrance. A corner property or a home with a side entry can make those distinctions especially important. For an apartment, clarify whether the review concerns the unit door or the building entrance.
How do you check direction with a compass?
Follow the device’s calibration instructions, hold it as directed and repeat the reading away from nearby metal, vehicles, magnets or electrical equipment. Record the reading and where it was taken. If repeated readings disagree materially, resolve the uncertainty before treating the direction as established.
Compare the measurement with the north reference on a current plan. Magnetic north and true north are different references; ask the plan provider which one is shown. The top edge of an online floor-plan image is not necessarily north, and a rotated image should not be treated as a compass.
Are north- and east-facing entrances always best?
North and east entrances are common preferences in some Vastu traditions, but they are starting points rather than complete assessments. Room placement, the entrance’s exact position and the overall layout can change a practitioner’s interpretation.
For example, a family comparing two north-facing homes may find that only one has a southwest primary bedroom and a southeast kitchen. The identical facing label has not captured the differences that matter to them.
Should you avoid a south-facing house?
Do not make an automatic decision from the word south. Traditional practitioners may consider a south-facing home differently depending on entrance placement and the arrangement inside. West-facing homes also deserve a complete review rather than a blanket label.
Write down your family’s essential preferences and discuss the plan with the practitioner whose approach you follow. In a Calgary or Airdrie search, compare that assessment with the home’s condition, usable space, location and budget before deciding whether to proceed.
What other features should you examine?
Review the kitchen, primary bedroom, northeast area and centre alongside the entrance. Common traditional preferences include a southeast kitchen, southwest primary bedroom and northeast prayer or quiet space. These describe room locations; bed direction and cooking direction are separate observations.
Our house-plan Vastu guide explains these checks in more detail. If you are considering land or a new design, also review plot orientation and layout considerations.
What should buyers verify beyond direction?
A preferred entrance does not establish the property’s condition or suitability. Follow the home-buying due-diligence process, including appropriate inspection, financing and property-record checks. Discuss proposed changes to doors, walls or room uses with suitable professionals before assuming they are feasible.
Frequently asked questions
Which door should I measure if I mostly use the garage?
Record both the main entrance and the entrance you use daily. Explain the distinction when seeking a traditional assessment rather than silently substituting one for the other.
Can a phone compass be used?
It can assist with an initial reading when used according to its instructions. Check calibration and repeat readings; uncertain measurements should remain provisional.
Does an entrance direction guarantee good fortune?
No. Vastu is a cultural and traditional practice. Neither an entrance direction nor a layout assessment guarantees health, wealth, investment returns or personal outcomes.
Ready to review your home layout?
After confirming orientation, use the Build Wealth Group Vastu Calculator for a preliminary review of manually entered room zones and broad entrance direction. It is not a live compass or an exact entrance-sector assessment.
