To check a house plan for Vastu, first establish north, then review the entrance, kitchen, primary bedroom, northeast area and centre of the home. Common traditional preferences include a southeast kitchen and southwest primary bedroom. Assess the whole layout rather than judging a property only by its front-door direction.

Why do families consider Vastu when choosing a home?

Vastu Shastra is a traditional Indian approach to the arrangement of buildings and spaces. For families who follow it, a home’s orientation and room placement can be meaningful cultural preferences. Discussing those preferences early helps you compare homes consistently and avoid discovering an important concern after making an offer.

Start by deciding which principles matter most to your household. A family that prioritizes a southwest primary bedroom may assess a home differently from one whose main concern is an entrance direction or a prayer space. There is no reason to assume every family follows the same interpretation.

What should you prepare before reviewing a floor plan?

Use a clear, current plan showing the entrance, room uses and all relevant floors. Confirm its north reference with the builder or plan provider. The top of a listing’s floor-plan image is not automatically north, and a mirrored builder model may reverse the layout. Mark north, south, east and west before drawing conclusions.

Identify the centre of the floor being reviewed and label the broad directional areas around it. For irregular shapes, extensions or rooms crossing several zones, seek a more detailed interpretation instead of forcing a simple answer.

What are five important Vastu checks for a house plan?

1. Where is the main entrance?

Record both the direction the door faces and its position within the plan. These are different observations. North and east entrances are commonly preferred in some traditions, but a facing label alone does not settle the assessment of the entire home.

2. Is the kitchen in the southeast?

The southeast is commonly associated with the fire element and preferred for a kitchen. Some approaches accept the northwest as an alternative. Distinguish the kitchen’s location from the direction someone faces while cooking. In an existing home, separately consider ventilation, safe appliance clearances and the feasibility of any proposed changes.

3. Is the primary bedroom in the southwest?

A southwest primary bedroom is a common traditional preference. Find the bedroom on the actual plan rather than inferring its position from photographs. Room location and the orientation of the bed are separate questions; both should be recorded if they matter to your family.

4. How is the northeast used?

Many Vastu approaches favour the northeast for a prayer or quiet space and prefer it to remain light and uncluttered. Check what is actually there, including bathrooms, storage and staircases. A small prayer area and a dedicated room are different design choices, so explain your needs clearly when comparing plans.

5. What occupies the centre?

The centre, often called the Brahmasthan, is traditionally treated as an important area of the home. Review circulation and obstructions there. This does not mean removing a wall or structural column: any building alteration requires appropriate professional assessment.

Is a north-facing house always better than a south-facing house?

No universal verdict follows from the facing direction alone. A north-facing home may still have room placements that conflict with a family’s preferences. A south-facing home deserves a review of the actual entrance position and internal layout before it is dismissed. Traditional approaches vary, particularly when they divide an entrance wall into smaller sectors.

For Calgary and Airdrie home searches, compare the full plan alongside your daily needs: bedroom count, usable space, privacy, daylight, commute and budget. A direction preference should be defined early enough to guide the search.

How should buyers handle a layout that is not a perfect match?

Separate fixed features from flexible ones. Changing which room is used as the primary bedroom may be straightforward; moving plumbing or a staircase may be expensive or impractical. List your essential preferences, acceptable compromises and questions for a chosen practitioner before discussing renovation costs.

Continue with the home-buying process and property due diligence. Cultural preferences should sit alongside inspection, financing and property-record checks.

Frequently asked questions

Can I review Vastu from listing photos?

Photos can help identify room uses, but they usually cannot establish reliable orientation or a complete layout. Ask for a plan and verify north.

Do all Vastu practitioners use identical rules?

No. Broad directional guidance may overlap, while detailed sector analysis and interpretation can differ. State the method being followed when seeking a detailed opinion.

Does a preferred layout guarantee prosperity or health?

No. Vastu is a cultural and traditional practice, and its interpretations do not guarantee health, wealth, investment returns or personal outcomes.

Want to apply these checks to your own layout?

Once you have confirmed north and mapped the rooms, use the Build Wealth Group Vastu Calculator for a preliminary review of manually entered home-layout directions. It supports your research and does not certify a property.
