When families ask me which Airdrie school is “best,” I usually recommend changing the question. The better question is: Which school path fits your child, your address and the way your family wants to learn?

Airdrie offers neighbourhood public schools, French Immersion, a Christian program within Rocky View Schools, Catholic schools and French-language education through FrancoSud. The city is also in the middle of an important school-construction cycle. That creates more choice over time, but it also makes old school lists and community assumptions unreliable.

If school access is important to your home purchase, confirm the designated school before removing conditions or making a long-term decision. A school that is close on a map may not be the school assigned to that address.

The quick answer: which Airdrie school path fits which family?

• Neighbourhood public school: Start with the Rocky View Schools attendance-area tool for the exact address, grade, program and school year.

• French Immersion: Rocky View Schools offers early French Immersion in Airdrie through designated elementary, middle and high-school pathways.

• Christian education within the public system: R.J. Hawkey and Meadowbrook host the Airdrie Christian Program. Confirm current grades and admission requirements directly with RVS.

• Catholic education: Calgary Catholic School District serves Airdrie through Good Shepherd, Our Lady Queen of Peace, St. Veronica and St. Martin de Porres. Designations depend on the address and grade.

There is no single “best school” for every Airdrie family

School rankings can be one data point, but they do not measure everything that affects a child’s experience. A useful comparison should also include:

• the designated school for the exact home address;

• grade configuration and whether a transition is approaching;

• program fit, including French Immersion or faith-based options;

• class and school-space pressures;

• transportation eligibility and the real door-to-door routine;

• learning supports, extracurriculars and school culture;

• the child’s interests, needs and comfort after visiting the school.

Rocky View Schools specifically says its attendance map is a guide, boundaries may change and the final school is confirmed during registration. That warning matters in Airdrie because many attendance areas and grade configurations changed in September 2025 to balance enrolment.

Airdrie public schools: begin with the designated pathway

Rocky View Schools operates Airdrie’s community public-school system. For 2026/27, families should use the live RVS attendance-area tool rather than relying on a neighbourhood blog, a builder brochure or an older listing description.

The 2025 changes moved Airdrie’s three RVS high schools—Bert Church, George McDougall and W.H. Croxford—to Grades 10–12. Most other RVS schools adjusted by one grade level, while Cooper’s Crossing School kept its existing configuration. Some communities were also redesignated.

That does not make one pathway better than another. It means a family buying in Southwinds, Windsong, Bayview, Cooper’s Crossing, King’s Heights or another Airdrie community should check four details:

1. the 2026/27 designated school for the exact address;

2. the designated middle- and high-school path;

3. whether a future school opening changes that path in 2027/28 or later; and

4. whether transportation is available and practical.

French Immersion in Airdrie

Rocky View Schools offers early French Immersion beginning in Kindergarten or Grade 1. Its current Airdrie program page identifies A.E. Bowers Elementary, École Edwards Elementary, École Airdrie Middle and George McDougall High as French Immersion locations.

The designated school depends on grade, program, address and year. Families should not assume the nearest French Immersion school is automatically available to them. Use the RVS map with the French Immersion filter and confirm the result during registration.

Parents comparing Airdrie with Calgary’s Traditional Learning Centre program should also understand that these are different models. RVS does not list a TLC-branded Airdrie program. Families looking for structure, language learning or a particular teaching philosophy should compare the actual program expectations and visit the school instead of treating the program names as interchangeable.

The Airdrie Christian Program

RVS offers a non-denominational Christian program in Airdrie within the public-school system. The division identifies R.J. Hawkey and Meadowbrook as the Airdrie locations. The program follows Alberta’s curriculum while integrating biblical instruction and Christian education.

This can be relevant for families who want faith integrated into the school day but prefer an RVS program. Program admission, grades served and transportation can differ from the regular neighbourhood stream, so confirm the current pathway directly with RVS before choosing a home around it.

Catholic schools in Airdrie

Calgary Catholic School District serves Airdrie through four established schools:

• Good Shepherd School;

• Our Lady Queen of Peace School;

• St. Veronica School; and

• St. Martin de Porres High School.

Catholic designations can change by community and grade. Families should use the district’s designated-school information and contact the school or district to confirm the correct pathway. St. Martin de Porres is also undergoing a provincially funded expansion, while a new Catholic elementary/junior-high project in Chinook Gate is at the planning stage as of August 2026.

Planning status is not the same as an opening date. Buyers should evaluate the school options that exist today and treat future capacity as a separate, time-sensitive factor.

Francophone education: École des Hautes-Plaines and the new Reunion secondary school

FrancoSud provides French-language education in Airdrie through École des Hautes-Plaines. This is different from French Immersion: Francophone-school eligibility is governed by constitutional and provincial rules, while French Immersion is a program within an English-language school authority.

FrancoSud broke ground in May 2026 on a dedicated Grade 7–12 secondary school in Reunion. FrancoSud says the new school is planned to open in 2028 with capacity for 285 students and future expansion to 435. It is expected to include specialized spaces for sciences, career and technology studies, fine arts, music and sports.

Families considering Reunion or northwest Airdrie should still verify eligibility, current school arrangements and the project timeline directly with FrancoSud. Construction schedules can change.

Airdrie high schools: compare programs, not just names

Airdrie’s RVS high schools are Bert Church, George McDougall and W.H. Croxford. All three serve Grades 10–12 in 2026/27. The most useful comparison is not a generic ranking. It is whether the designated school provides the courses, career pathways, athletics, arts, clubs and supports that matter to the student.

RVS also notes that Airdrie students can apply to career-discovery programs such as the Mechanics Training Centre and Building Futures. Availability and admission should be confirmed for the specific school year.

Before choosing a home primarily for a high school, review:

• the current course guide;

• graduation and post-secondary prerequisites;

• Advanced Placement or specialized course availability, if relevant;

• athletics, arts, trades and career programming;

• student-support services;

• transportation and the daily commute; and

• the designated feeder pathway for younger siblings.

New Airdrie schools coming after 2026

Airdrie’s growth has placed visible pressure on school capacity. The City reported that all Airdrie high schools were 104% utilized in 2024/25, while RVS high schools were 110% utilized. Those are historical planning figures, but they help explain the current construction program.

As of August 2026:

• South Windsong: RVS says the new school is expected to open as Kindergarten–Grade 8 in fall 2027, expand to Kindergarten–Grade 9 in 2028/29 and provide 905 student spaces. Attendance changes for affected southwest communities begin in 2027/28.

• Bayview: Alberta lists a new RVS Kindergarten–Grade 8 school under construction, with anticipated completion in 2028. The initial capacity is listed as 605 students, expandable to 905.

• New Airdrie high school: Alberta lists a new RVS high-school project at the construction-funding stage. Families should wait for an official location, attendance and opening announcement before relying on it.

• St. Martin de Porres: the Catholic high-school addition is under construction.

• Chinook Gate Catholic school: a new elementary/junior-high project has planning funding.

• Reunion Francophone secondary school: FrancoSud expects its new Grade 7–12 school to open in 2028.

These projects are important, but a future school should never be presented as guaranteed until the responsible authority confirms the opening, attendance area and registration process.

How to choose an Airdrie home when schools matter

I recommend completing the school check before becoming emotionally committed to a property.

1. Write down the child’s grade and preferred program. A boundary search without the correct grade and program can produce the wrong answer.

2. Check the exact property address. Do not use the community name alone.

3. Select the correct school year. The 2026/27 pathway may differ from 2027/28 in parts of southwest Airdrie.

4. Confirm directly with the school authority. Save the link or email with your moving records.

5. Test the daily routine. Drive the school route around drop-off or pickup time and check transportation rules.

6. Visit the school. Ask about programs, supports, activities and the transition process.

7. Treat future schools separately. Identify what is open, what is under construction and what only has planning approval.

This process is more useful than buying a home because someone online called one school “top-rated.”
